When summer heat hits the DC area, we’re always on the lookout for something fun, active, and just a little out of the ordinary. That’s exactly how I discovered Harpers Ferry Waterpark when it popped up on my Instagram feed. This brand-new inflatable water adventure opened in June 2025 and is set on a scenic quarry near Historic Harpers Ferry. The moment we arrived, I knew this floating playground would become one of our favorite summer getaways. The water was so clean and clear, it reminded me of the natural springs in Florida. Keep reading for all the tips you’ll need to plan your visit to this hidden summer gem.

What exactly is Harpers Ferry Waterpark?
An hour outside DC, nestled between tree-covered cliffs and deep blue quarry water, Harpers Ferry Waterpark looked like something out of a travel magazine. A huge inflatable obstacle course floated across the quarry, complete with slides, trampolines, swings, climbing walls, and more. It was the kind of setup that makes both kids and adults excited to jump in.
The waterpark is open to kids ages five and up, as long as they’re at least 45 inches tall and can swim proficiently. Everyone must wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket (you are free to bring your own), and lifeguards are stationed all around the course. Strong swimming skills are definitely recommended, since you’re in open quarry water.
It’s a perfect activity for families, adventure seekers, and even big groups. If you’re bringing ten or more people, River Riders offers group discounts.

Practical Information
How To Get There
The main check-in location for Harpers Ferry Waterpark is at 408 Alstadts Hill Road, Harpers Ferry, WV. All guests must check in here first. Once you’re checked in and fitted with a life jacket, a shuttle bus will take you to the waterpark site, which is located on a separate property a few minutes away. Free parking is available on-site.
Starting July 17th, the check-in area is directly at the quarry. The new address is Olympic Way, Millville, WV. Guests must have fully prepaid reservations and fill out waivers for every person in their party beforehand. An attendant will be at the gate to check your reservation before directing you to the parking area. As you exit your vehicle, make sure to bring your ID for checking in. You will then watch a brief safety video before being picking up your life jacket.
Always allow extra time on weekends or holidays, as traffic through Harpers Ferry can be heavy.

Hours of Operation
Harpers Ferry Waterpark is open daily through September 30. Sessions are 90 minutes long. On weekdays, there are 4 scheduled time slots: 11:30am, 1pm, and 2:30pm. Weekends have more slots: 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm, and 5:30pm.

Participants must be at least 5 year old and at least 45″ tall. The quarry is 80+ ft deep and all guests must be proficient swimmers.

Our Experience Visiting Harpers Ferry Waterpark
Our drive from the DC suburbs took nearly 90 minutes since we hit traffic on the way, but we still made it to River Riders on time. River Riders is a well-known outfitter for rafting, tubing, and ziplining. We were actually there just a few months ago for another adventure, that time, snow tubing. But I digress.
After checking in and sitting through a quick safety briefing and life jacket fitting, we boarded a shuttle bus for a short five-minute ride to the waterpark location. Once we arrived, the head lifeguard greeted us with a few last-minute safety reminders: no going under the obstacles, no entering the water without a life jacket. Then we were free to head straight to the inflatables.
Next to the waterpark, there’s a small stretch of beach with lounge chairs, picnic tables, and umbrellas for spectators. Large water jugs sat on the tables, and the lifeguards made sure to remind everyone to stay hydrated throughout the session.
We spent the entire time climbing, balancing, sliding, falling in, and laughing nonstop. My daughter took on every obstacle like a champ, while I focused on not completely wiping out. The cool quarry water felt amazing on a hot June day. The energy was high, the scenery was beautiful, and Harpers Ferry Waterpark delivered nothing but fun.
To top it off, there were a few paddleboards available on a first-come, first-served basis. About an hour into our session, I was ready for a break from the inflatables and grabbed a board. I paddled out around the back of the course and watched my daughter having the time of her life. Eventually, she joined me, exhausted but smiling, and we floated together for the last ten minutes of the session. Soon it was time to board the shuttle and head back to the main office. We were soaked, happy, and already talking about when we could return.

Tips For Visiting Harpers Ferry Waterpark
To make your day go smoothly, here a few things to keep in mind:
- Arrive early: at least one hour before your scheduled session. River Riders is very busy during the summer season. That means you will most likely will have to park off-site, walk up to 10 mins uphill to the main office for check-in. You will also need to sit through a safety video, get a life jacket, then board a shuttle bus to take you to the waterpark location
- Use the bathrooms in the main office before boarding the shuttle bus. You can also use the changing rooms there to get into your swimsuits.
- Bring towels, sunscreen, and dry clothes for after your session
- Bring a waterproof phone pouch to keep your phone for getting wet
- Pack light: no need to bring valuables down to the quarry. There are lockers available at the main office, and the shuttle ride is quick and easy. Be aware they are no stores nearby and you should bring snacks and drinks with you, especially water.

Food and Post-Activity Options
After our waterpark session, we took the shuttle back to River Riders’ main office for a late lunch. We had packed a picnic, but there’s also a taco truck on site, along with Alstadts Ale House if you’re in the mood for a sit-down meal or a cold drink. There’s a couple of shaded picnic tables nearby, and it’s a great spot to recharge before heading out.
Since we weren’t quite ready to call it a day, we decided to drive 15 minutes to Shepherdstown, a charming nearby town with cute shops and cafes. We had one mission in mind: ice cream. Rock Hill Creamery came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The ice cream was creamy, flavorful, and the perfect way to cool off after a hot day on the water. I got the coconut chip, my daughter went for classic strawberry, and both were delish.
If you have more time, Harpers Ferry Waterpark also makes a great starting point for a full weekend escape. River Riders offers on-site cabins and campsites, that put you within easy reach of hiking trails, ziplining courses, tubing routes, and historic sites in downtown Harpers Ferry. Whether you stay overnight or just make it a day trip, there’s no shortage of things to see and do nearby.
