New York Travel Tips During Christmas Season

Where To Stay in New York at Christmas

Christmas season in New York City is peak season and hotel and other accommodations prices will be higher. Since most of the attractions listed above are located in Midtown Manhattan, I recommend staying in that general area and check the following hotels:

The Motto by Hilton New York City Chelsea is a fantastic hotel in the Chelsea neighborhood. The hotel offers complimentary bikes, a fitness center, a terrace and restaurant/bar. The Hilton Garden Inn New York Times Square South located in Hell’s Kitchen is another great hotel option for families in NYC. Their rooms are roomier by NYC standards and include free wi-fi, mini-fridge and microwave. The Holiday Inn New York City is conveniently located close to the subway and Times Square, yet far enough away that you won’t have to deal with crowds to get in and out of the hotel.

How To Get Around New York at Christmas

If you stay in Midtown, you can walk to the majority of the attractions on this list. Don’t forget strollers for the younger kiddos! Should you need to use public transit, New York is extremely well serviced by a large and reliable public transport network operating 24/7. Yellow cabs and ride shares are also convenient but fares can add up quickly especially if there is traffic (which is bound to happen!) A fun way to explore is to take a pedicab tour which is sure to amaze the kiddos!

Where To Eat in New York at Christmas

There are literally thousands of restaurants in New York to choose from. My personal recommendations are Rolf’s, Ellen’s Stardust Diner in Times Square – a famous diner known for its singing servers, and Santa’s Winter Wonderland at Pier 15, a pop-up village made of glass chalets, serving holiday treats and drinks while overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge.

If you are looking for places to eat on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day, I recommend heading downtown to Chinatown and ordering Dim Sum at Now Wah Tea Parlor or Golden Unicorn. You cannot go wrong with either restaurant. Another alternative is to enjoy a Buffet Brunch Cruise along the Hudson and East Rivers. Be aware that many restaurants will only have a prix fixe menu on Christmas Day so check ahead of time if you have picky eaters in your family.

Final Thoughts

Christmas in New York is truly magical, especially when you experience it as a family. From ice skating in Central Park and festive holiday shows to Christmas trees, Santa experiences, and cozy seasonal meals, the city offers something for everyone. Whether you stick to classic Manhattan traditions or venture a little farther for unique holiday experiences, Christmas in New York has a way of turning even a short trip into lasting memories. And who knows, maybe you’ll find a new tradition to add to your family’s holiday repertoire.

Happy holidays, everyone and thank you for reading!
